AthleticNET Bio

Early in his childhood, Xavier[ pronounced “Ex- Zay-Vee-Err”] Drumgoole was into karate. He has since gone on to earn a  black belt. He participated in YMCA sports from time to time, but was never good at them he remembers.

It wasn’t until seventh grade that he got involved in basketball, football and track. He was best at track.

In the two months before the beginning of his freshman year, Xavier grew from 5-05 to 5-11. He played basketball in the fall and in the spring he had a good year of track that saw him long jump reach personal bests of 20-08.75 and 45-03.75. This convinced his parents that he needed to turn more focus to track outside the high school season. They entered him into an AAU team, Xtreme Force, the summer between his freshman and sophomore years. The AAU Club coach was  Johnny Washington,  a 3-time All American at  University of Texas in ‘87 and ‘88 and his wife Martha.  It was a good decision as he soared to a second place finish mark of 45-01 at the AAU National Junior Olympics 15-16 year old division.

Xavier didn’t solely focus on track. During the winter, he played basketball his freshman and sophomore years. Coach Washington would hold Sunday practices so Xavier was able to get some jumping in.

His sophomore season there was more success, but a sixth place finish at the Texas UIL State 6A meet was a wake up call of sorts.

“The goal was to get there first,” he says of his sophomore season. “But once I was there, it really showed me that there were levels to what I was doing. I really just wanted to compete as much as I could and wanted to come back and I wanted to win it. It was cool to go as a sophomore and get sixth. I was happy, but I wasn't fulfilled. I really wanted to be up there because it doesn't feel good to lose.

He continued to work hard and this past season he competed indoors in track along with basketball. With the limited jumping, Drumgoole was able to finish fourth at NIKE Indoor Nationals with a 48-10.5 mark and 20th in the long jump with a 20-11.25. Outdoors, he earned his first Texas UIL State 6A championship with a 49-06.75 jump.

He finally got off a 50+ mark at NIKE Outdoor Nationals June 18. In a spirited battle with fellow Texan, Karson Gordon, Drumgoole took second with a 50-06.75 mark.

This summer he hopes to even go father as he feels he has been stuck at 50 feet for the past year. He’ll compete at the AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, IA on Wednesday, August 2.
“I know that I've been built to go 50 for so long. I know I can do 51 and it's just a matter of putting it together.”
In the future he hopes to go even further. He may incorporate some more weight lifting which to date he has only done for two weeks before basketball practice begins. He still plans to keep playing basketball, but he will turn more focus to jumping during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

“I think my goal for next year as a whole season……. I'm gonna try to hit 52 and beyond, you know.”
