Get to Know Q & A

Your nickname, if any, and how did it come about?

Em(started by family, friends and coaches) or E wiz(started by my teacher and classmates)

How did you get your start in track and field and/or cross country?

My parents were always running so it sparked an interest in me as well. After joining my mom for a few runs in 5th grade, I decided to join track and cross country in middle school.

Your parents' athletic background. Did they play any sports-where(HS, College, Pro), what position, when, any awards?  Please include names.

My mom(Loren W) never ran competitively, but she was really into running for fun and to stay fit. On the other hand, my dad (Mike W) ran in college for the University of Michigan and later ran for team USA. He has received a lot of awards and titles over his career.

Any siblings? Please include names and genders and any accomplishments in or out of sport.

I have an older brother named Eli(17), and a younger brother named Gabe(12). My older brother was very involved in running, soccer and basketball throughout his life. My younger brother is more into flag football, basketball and track as of this year.

Outside interests- your hobbies, talents(musical, chess, anything), volunteering- what do you do in your free time?

During the summer I love being outside and doing activities like; Hiking, swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, and camping with family/friends. During the school year I enjoy doing more art like drawing, painting, and ceramics.

At school, do you do any extracurricular activities? i.e. student government, clubs or other sports.

I played soccer for many years along with running, but decided to completely focus on track/cross country my sophomore year.

Movie watcher and/or book reader? What is/are your favorite book and/or movie and why?

I really like young adult books and have been a fan of the Hunger Games series.

How do you deal with setbacks and triumphs?

Setbacks are always hard so I just try to remind myself that it's all part of the sport and everyone has ups and downs throughout their career. Triumphs always get me excited for what's next and help build my love for the sport.

Pet owner? If so, what is your pet's name and type/breed?

I have a dog named Hero that is an Indian Periah. My family adopted him from India 5ish years ago.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I am committed to NC state and am hoping to achieve big things while getting a business degree.

What words would you have for your sixth grade self?

Just to have fun and enjoy the process.

Who is your favorite track and field athlete and why? How about other sports-who is your favorite athlete and why?

I don't look up to anyone in particular, but I appreciate all the talented athletes that are dedicated and show their success through God.

- Many athletes are quoted as saying " trust the process". What does that mean to you?

Everyone goes through ups and downs throughout their career so you just have to push through the rough patches.

How do you balance social media with your performance? Does social media impact you positively or negatively?

I don't have much social media and I think it mainly impacts me in a positive way. Instagram is cool in the fact that it allows you to come across more information and media regarding your sport.

Favorite and not favorite high school subject and why?

I really love art like ceramics and painting. Social studies has never been my favorite.

Favorite musical artist and why? What is your favorite song by that artist?

Recently I have been listening to more music by Tyler Childers because I want to know more of his songs before I go to his concert this summer. Normally country music has never been my favorite, but I've been loving a lot of his music.

Favorite pre- and post- meal?

Pre race I always like to eat toast and eggs for breakfast. It really depends on the day, but typically I always crave something sweet after a race.

Dire question warning :) If you were unable to continue to compete in track and field, what would you do?

I think I would end up going back into soccer or try to get really good at art.

What do you see your legacy being-in and outside the track world?

I would love to get really good at the 5k/10k and eventually maybe try marathons.
